A Festival of Snakes

Black Rat Snake Photo from>> www.nature.ca

Leonardo da Vinci once asked “Why does the eye see a thing more clearly in dreams than the imagination when awake?” I don’t know the answer. Everyone is fascinated by dreams – especially when we become Superman or Batman and impossible things like that.

Well, without further ado, this dream I had just nights ago wouldn’t escape this blog thing. I dreamed of having to come across swamps and there are so many ladies – all of them are known to me – we were chatting and everything and we were all happy. Suddenly the lines occupying my views move – they later came to my understanding that snakes were all around the place. Snakes of all sizes and colors were present, damn I should have called the roll were it not for the fact that nobody brought a copy of the paperback edition of Wikipedia.

The following excerpts are quotations from http://www.experiencefestival.com which I came to know through Google. I seem to relate to some but most of them does not interest me at all. It’s fun. And, yes, I was bitten not only once – in that dream – by a snake I haven’t even got the chance to shake hands with. Enjoy!

A little intro about Snakes: Snakes are cold blooded legless reptiles closely related to lizards, which share the order Squamata. There are also several species of legless lizard which superficially resemble snakes, but are not otherwise related to them. A love of snakes is called ophiophilia, a fear of snakes is called ophidiophobia (or snakephobia). But as far as I am concerned – I don’t want to face any snake nor be bitten by one at any point in time!

To see a snake or be bitten by one in your dream, signifies hidden fears and worries that are threatening you. Your dream may be alerting you to something in your waking life that you are not aware of or that has not yet surfaced. The snake may also be seen as phallic and thus symbolize dangerous and forbidden sexuality. The snake may also refer to a person around you who is callous, ruthless, and can’t be trusted. As a positive symbol, snakes represent transformation, knowledge and wisdom. It is indicative of self-renewal and positive changes. Source: http://dreammoods.com

II.

In its psychological interpretation a snake in your dream is a phallic symbol, and to dream of one, especially if it was coiled around you, or otherwise on your body, is a warning that you may be a slave to either your sexual passions or repression. However, according to the oracles, snakes in a dream are warnings of various troubles, obstacles, or treachery. Of course the colors and other details must be carefully considered, but as a general rule: to dream that you were bitten by one portends a period of struggle against unfortunate circumstances, and if it was a cobra, it carries a special warning to guard against accidents in the following few weeks. If your dream featured a snake wound around you which you could not throw off, you are being warned to expect treachery where you least suspect it. To dream of being surrounded and unable to kill more than one or two indicates that you are in danger of being seriously cheated by someone you trust, but if you managed to kill (or get rid of) them all, it is a sign that you will succeed in spite of any hostile opposition; to walk over snakes without trying to kill them suggests that you will, in the end, actually turn the tables on those who are trying to block your way. To dream of playfully handling snakes suggests that you are in danger of being led astray by unprincipled friends or associates; and if your dream featured a professional snake charmer at work, it indicates that you will have to defend your reputation against malicious gossip. 1. An ancient symbol of transmutation. The dreamer will soon undergo a vast inner change that will be reflected in her outer life. If the dream is a positive and uplifting one, then good times are ahead. If the dream is a scary one, the times ahead may still be good ones, but the dreamer needs to be very careful of pitfalls along the way.

2. An even more ancient symbol for the Great Goddess. If the dreamer is a woman, then she will soon come into realization of her power as a woman. If the dreamer is a man, especially if he is single, a very powerful and exciting woman will soon come into his life—though she may not be a potential love partner.

Astrological parallels: Scorpio, Pluto. Tarot parallels: The Tower, The Empress.

Snakes often represent troublesome situations that are intimidating and disturbing. These situations are very complex, and it is difficult to deal with them, you might get hurt. Sometimes, a snake stands for your enemies who are threatening you. Seeing snakes in a pit is a bad luck dream, it reflects your fears and inability to control the situation, or someone is intimidating you or uses your moral standards to manipulate you. Some snake dreams have sexual implications. A single snake in the bedroom in a woman’s dream may represent a man in her life or masculine energy that is creating power issues in the relationship.

Meaning of dream with Snake from different traditions In Indian tradition, moving snakes symbolize the stirring of kundalini. In Freudian terms, snake is a phallic symbol. Jung, however, interpreted snakes as symbolic of the conflict between conscious attitudes and instincts.

VI.

In some cultures snakes are highly regarded and symbolize the ability to transcend into higher levels of consciousness or into areas of knowledge that exist outside perceived time and space. In the pre-Christian days, snakes were considered symbols of fertility, healing, and nurturing (the healing serpent representing a god). Post Adam and Eve, snakes are often considered symbols of temptation and evil, anger, and envy. Snakes emerging out of the ground may represent your unconscious or repressed materials coming to your conscious mind. Freud thought that the snake was a phallic symbol. It is amazing how many people have snake dreams! Most snake dreams seem to be disturbing and they leave the dreamer feeling anxious and afraid. There are no simple interpretations to the snake dreams. Each dreamer must consider their own situation and all of the details of the dream. Sometimes snakes may be phallic symbols and other times they represent negativity in our lives that hampers our progress and constantly threatens us. In the long run the snake may be a positive symbol; it may represent difficulties that lead us to the center of personality and result in feelings of completeness. VII.

  • For a woman to dream that a dead snake is biting her, foretells she will suffer from malice of a pretended friend.
  • To dream of snakes, is a foreboding of evil in its various forms and stages.
  • To see them wriggling and falling over others, foretells struggles with fortune and remorse.
  • To kill them, you will feel that you have used every opportunity of advancing your own interests, or respecting that of others. You will enjoy victory over enemies.
  • To walk over them, you will live in constant fear of sickness, and selfish persons will seek to usurp your place in your companion’s life.
  • If they bite you, you will succumb to evil influences, and enemies will injure your business.
  • To dream that a common spotted snake approaches you from green herbs, and you quickly step aside as it passes you, and after you had forgotten the incident to again see it approaching and growing in dimensions as it nears you, finally taking on the form of an enormous serpent; if you then, after frantic efforts, succeed in escaping its attack, and altogether lose sight of it, it foretells that you will soon imagine you are being disobeyed and slighted, and things will go on from bad to worse. Sickness, uneasiness and unkindness will increase to frightful proportions in your mind; but they will adjust themselves to a normal basis, and by the putting aside of imaginary trouble, and masterfully shouldering duties, you will be contented and repaid.
  • To dream that a snake coils itself around you and darts its tongue out at you, is a sign that you will be placed in a position where you will be powerless in the hands of enemies, and you will be attacked with sickness.
  • To handle them, you will use strategy to aid in overthrowing opposition.
  • To see hairs turn into snakes, foretells that seeming insignificant incidents will make distressing cares for you.
  • If snakes turn into unnatural shapes, you will have troubles which will be dispelled if treated with indifference, calmness and will power.
  • To see or step on snakes while wading or bathing, denotes that there will be trouble where unalloyed pleasure was anticipated.
  • To see them bite others, foretells that some friend will be injured and criticised by you.
  • To see little snakes, denotes you will entertain persons with friendly hospitality who will secretly defame you and work to overthrow your growing prospects.
  • To see children playing with them, is a sign that you will be nonplussed to distinguish your friends from your enemies. For a woman to think a child places one on the back of her head, and she hears the snake’s hisses, foretells that she will be persuaded to yield up some possession seemingly for her good, but she will find out later that she has been inveigled into an intrigue in which enemies will tantalize her. To see snakes raising up their heads in a path just behind your friend, denotes that you will discover a conspiracy which has been formed to injure your friend and also yourself. To think your friend has them under control, denotes that some powerful agency will be employed in your favor to ward off evil influences.
  • For a woman to hypnotize a snake, denotes your rights will be assailed, but you will be protected by law and influential friends.

Epilogue

Ending this passage of interpretations, let me quote the great George Bernard Shaw:

“You see things and you say ‘Why?’. But I dream things that never were, and I say ‘Why Not?'”

I see things in my dreams – but at the perfect and most beneficial perspective – I will also say “Why Not?”. If snake bites could only make people smile in reality – as we all know it won’t – then bite me, why not? 🙂
